Trend Talk

Some friends of mine are talking about trends. They can't give up the old stuff and they hate the new, or anyone who even mentions new. Any comments?

About trends, never adopt one that is unflattering. There are plenty of others out there to choose from that will work for you.
On the other hand, don't purchase something from a past trend, even if you see it for sale, and it is a good look for you. The dated aspect of the style will sink it.

Wear what you already own, but don't stock up on more. When you are shopping, educate your eye with fashion mags, runway shows, current websites, and buy the new stuff! Learn what is best for you, and look for that. This will help you to move on. Never stock up on a trend, nor on any other item, no matter how good that packed closet makes you feel.
Remember that some updated accessories, like bags, bangles and necklaces will go far to freshen your so-called "classic" look. They work for most body types, too.

I agree with this post, but I have noticed that many people tag a look as unflattering or "not for my body type" before they really give it a shot.

For example, I am slim, but have a pretty pronounced pear shape and I don't exactly love my lower thighs. My body shape should make narrower jeans or shorter skirts less flattering looks for me. Instead I have found that these looks can be quite good for me but that I do need to exercise a little more care to get the right shape in the pieces I buy than someone with a different figure.

Generally, if I am a little uncertain about something, and it is a really different silhouette for me, I try the item on with the appropriate supporting pieces to make an actual outfit. I may even have DH or my BFF snap some pictures of me from a few angles so I can evaluate the outfit. This techique allows me to see that my narrower jeans are actually pretty cute and that boyfriend cardis aren't my thing.

Sometimes newer looks are not less flattering. They are just different.

Hi Kitsmommy,
I have had similar experiences. You just never know until you try the garment on. Photos really are eye-opening, that's for sure!!!

On the boyfriend cardis, I thought they weren't my thing either, but paired with a knee length floaty dress and belted - great! I have one BF cardi and that's how I wear it.
