I went shopping today in ATL and NY&Co. I like the casual vibe. I don't want to look like I am at work all the time, but the outfits looked sloppy to me. Any ideas?
Try adding one item that's soft, wrinkly fabric; or fits loosely, but keep the rest of the outfit pristine. Your white jeans can be pressed and have a crisp roll at the hem, and your shoes can be patent peep slides. Then you can add the partially unbuttoned, wrinkly linen top/jacket or cotton tee. Even though ATL, and even JC, will show outfits that are all muss, remember that they are selling those pieces and are not about to add a structured jacket from outside of their collection. But you can. Watch out for the thong sandal (aka leather flip.) if you add that to an outfit of unstructured pieces, you're toast. But if you have sleek hair and large bangles, and a white cotton shirt dress, they will support the casual footwear. Practice walking in the flats. If you walk like a duck, audibly flipping and flapping what's the point? Just like heels, it takes practice to do it right.
This is a beach cover-up, not an outfit. And even so, it's nicely ironed. Things are messier in the store. Long Tank

Looks Messy

That really helped. Especially JCrew seems to be making their outfits look really sloppy lately. Ok for teens and college kids but a disaster for most work environments.
Seeing how one item like that can be combined with crisper looking items really helps.
I don't think that slop works for teens and college kids, either. We give them a pass b/c of their age, much like a learner's permit, but the totally subcasual looks themselves aren't doing anything for these girls (or guys.) I know that they wear pajamas to class, but that doesn't make it pretty. And if you are overweight, and the muffin top is rising from your jeans, that will
sink the look no matter what your age.
Use the look as a casual accent, and don't go over the edge into unkempt.
