A Bag

Am thinking I could use a ladylike handbag on some daytime occasions. Am going to a mayoral inauguration where no one will care what bag I carry but I care.

I don't carry much in a bag for comfort's sake and I don't need much with me. Most of my daytime bags are small/medium size in neutral colors chosen partly for their ability to stay on my shoulder. They have saddle stitching. I
don't have anything dressy, what you would envision someone carrying where they once had to wear white gloves. :)

This photo of Queen Elizabeth about to board a train put me in mind.

What are the modern considerations for such a bag, if any? I'm a thrift shopper, which I know many of you folks abhor, so I want to be on the lookout for a non-retro feel to the bag.

I'm not sure that I would consider dear Queen Elizabeth as a fashion icon, but since you are looking for a Thrift bag, here are a few pointers:

Look over the collection of a hot bag designer, like Marc Jacobs.
Note the scale and the arrangement of the leather. Here's one that's small, has a shiny surface, and is folded (like a "parachute.")
Small Para

This one is also small, and has an animal print texture Snake

Note that a light pastel color is featured. Very ladylike in color and shape (a pouch) but the snake effect adds pizazz.

Even though you look for Thrift items, educate yourself about current trends and try to find them (or some of their major features) in the items that you choose. Make no attempt to recreate the styles of the past with your accessories. Vintage accessories require very modern outfits for support. Nothing QE would wear, I'm sure.

Good Luck!

ha ha, I guess I wasn't clear. Not looking to the Queen as fashion icon but I do like the structured, simple nature of the bag. I'm more curvy and like clothes that emphasize this and I want the structured, more rectangular, hard surface bag as counterpoint. I do keep up with trends and I do buy retail and especially for newer shoes and bags. There isn't much of a trend, though, in this kind of bag. I know an upcoming trend is what I would call "rough trade" but I don't want to look like some version of biker grandma. I like to look pretty and energetic. I figured if anyone knew where I could see a modern non-soft, non-pouchy bag it was you!
